Influence of Pipe Damage to The Production Process

Chemical plants rely on its pipes to efficiently deliver product to the refining machines and, eventually, to vendors. Normally, this is done through steel pipes which can handle the high temperatures of these liquids. However, sometimes this efficiency is stopped in its tracks by corrosion.

The Effects of Corrosion

When a pipe’s surface is eaten away it can cause, at a minimum, contamination of other chemical mixtures. At the maximum, it can cause production outages and loss of business. And, if the chemicals react poorly to other elements, it can be devastating for infrastructure and workers.

A Potential Solution

1. The Lining Process

A supplier should bond and cure rubber lining to the inside of a pipe via high-pressure steam vulcanization. The best way to control and monitor this is via the proper software program. Don’t be shy to ask the manufacturer what they use. If it’s not too risky, see if you can watch the process firsthand.

2. Quality Assurance

Before it gets on the delivery truck, each pipe needs to be examined in numerous ways. Hydro testing should be conducted to ensure there are no leaks. Further, the lining needs to be examined for defects like pin holes. Request their QA checklist to see the steps they take.

3. Warranty

A rubber lined pipe can get green lights across the board in a QA test. But what if something happens while in production? The supplier should warranty their pipes for workmanship and material defects. If they don’t, and the pipe starts to leak, then you’re in the same situation as before.
